One of my favorite topics to read and discuss is the benefit of Vitamin D. It was well known, yet anyone talking about its benefit was censored and now after a failed vaccine roll out we can finally pontificate on how we could have saved lives. Dr. Mercola has been preaching this since the beginning of the pandemic. His reckless recommendation that you should dare to ‘take control of your own health’ and optimize your Vitamin D got him deplatformed from his social media accounts. It earned him the title of being part of the Disinformation Dozen and it has funneled him into the Substack platform with paid subscriptions as the only way to view his past articles.
Fast forward two years and a failed global effort to vaccinate the world, we can now see research demonstrating the truth that was being spoken by Dr. Mercola (and many others). I have written previously about this research that directs our attention to optimized blood levels of 25 hydroxyvitamin D of 50ng/ml can essentially eliminate the risk of hospitalization and death from COVID.
Now we have this study that demonstrates that the use of calcifediol (a type of ‘activated’ Vitamin D found in the blood) when given to patients hospitalized with COVID decreases significantly the need for ICU admissions. The study had no deaths (50 total patients) in those treated with calcifediol but had 2 deaths in the control (26 total patients).
Some doctors will talk about the fact that we really don’t have a cold and Flu season, we have Vitamin D deficiency season. The reason for this is that above 37 degrees latitude during the winter months, there is not enough UVB to process Vitamin D naturally. A large portion of the United States is above this position and without supplementation blood levels of 25 hydroxyvitamin D drop during the winter months.

One of the interesting things that I learned when researching for our paper is that some countries (Finland) supplement Vitamin D to their citizens during the winter months. Finland has a population Vitamin D deficiency of about 5%. Compare that to the US that ranges between 40-81%. Source for death totals.

The United States experienced a death rate of 2868 deaths/ 1 million population
The United States is ranked 18 out of 225 nations for total death count
Something critical that needs to gain more public attention is the ability of high fructose corn syrup to deactivate Vitamin D circulating in the blood. Our American diet has no shortage sugar and may be another contributing factor to the deleterious outcomes with COVID (aside from the hospitals incentives to kill people).
The combination of a diet both high in sugar and high fructose corn syrup leads to increased presentation of obesity and diabetes, two major risk factors for negative COVID outcomes. What is interesting about the above graph is the nations on the far right of the graph are ranked in the top 50% for highest deaths tolls from COVID. Those on the left side of the graph are ranked in the bottom 50% with lower death tolls.
As we understand more about metabolic disease and the impact on our body’s ability to fight illnesses, be encouraged to optimize your Vitamin D, get outside and exercise, reduce your overall sugar intake and as Dr. Mercola would say….TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH!

Thank you Dr. Jessica for the great article on vitamin d. I like milk a lot, but since Covid scam started, me and my daughter both upped our d,c and zinc intake. And i have pretty much eliminated sugar and carbs. Bad for my dentist ( though both encourage eating well and taking care of myself), but been very good for me.
